resume-mistakesYour resume is the most important document you will ever create, its the first step to getting employment. However it can also be the document that if not properly written can destroy your chances of getting a job interview. We have compiled a list of the top 5 mistakes that are commonly found on resumes.

Lets start from the top of your resume.

Resume Mistake No. 1: Small Name Font

Your name should stand out and be the first text at the top of your resume. Increase the size of the text and add colour to make it prominent.

Resume Mistake No. 2: To many personal details

Cut the personal details! Personal details like how many children you have or religion should be taken out as they are taking up valuable selling space.

Resume Mistake No. 3: Personal attributes

This another waste of space. If your are listing things like you are honest, hardworking etc these need to be demonstrated not just written down. Anyone can write down that they are hardworking on their resume. The employer will ask these sort of questions to your references, don’t waste the selling space.

Resume Mistake No. 4: Poor Career Objective

Career Objective can be a good selling tool by giving the reader a insight into your history. However if it is poorly written can work against you, e.g “My career objective is to find full time employment”, no kidding.

Resume Mistake No. 5: Boring First Page

Your first page of your resume is the most important and maybe the only page read. Don’t waste the space with anything that is not trying to sell you for the position.

A good resume takes years to perfect but hopefully by highlighting the above mistakes you won’t make them.
