We can help you get this job

cold calling1 Modern Job Networking Its common knowledge amongst employment consultants that only a fraction of job vacancies ever reach an external advertising medium with a massive 75% of jobs being filled through alternative methods - “the hidden job market”.

So does this mean, somewhere, somehow there are thousands more vacancies being listed? Well “yes” and “no”.

Out of the 75% of vacancies that are never listed (hidden) many are filled internally. However, if we say there is still some 25% of this figure that can be reached by you the “job seeker”, then there is still a huge number or potential offerings that you will not find in any newspaper or online job sites.

So how can you find this missing segment of the job market? - It’s a simple as picking up the phone and getting onto the Internet/email!

Modern Job Networking

Employers have always sort comfort in a referral system based on existing employees recommending a friend, family or just “someone they know”. Job referrals are the largest recruitment method outside external advertising and its a recruitment agencies worst nightmare.

By simply asking friends, family or contacts to “keep you in mind”, you can create a new window of opportunity, and a new avenue to find employment. It’s highly effective system, however it is down to you to ask, not for others to approach you.

Start talking to people within your industry. Start “catching up” with the right people, could be ex-colleagues or ex-bosses, you could find yourself talking to the right person at the right time for the right position. Job Networking takes alot dedication - not desperation.

Use Social Networking Sites

Do not forget to use Social Networking Sites (Facebook, Twitter, My Space etc), they are great for finding work. Take Facebook for example, change your status to “Hey everyone I am look for a Waiter Job, know of any?”. That way you have all your Facebook friends looking for you. I like to call it “Viral Job Hunting”.

Cold/Warm Calling

Cold calling is a tried and tested method of finding work. Call recruitment agencies, ex-employers and previous competition. Make sure you “name drop” e.g. ,”I’ve previously worked for Bill from Custom Wheels Brisbane”, you must spark interest in the person you are calling. Never leave a cold call without some form of information, always ask “Do you know anyone that is looking for workers”.

Be prepared, as in most instances you will receive a rejection, but do not take this personally as many employers will be happy to provide some form of advice.
