We can help you get this job

FollowupletterWhenever you go to a job fair, or go through an job interview, make sure you get a business card from each person you speak to. Afterwards, send a brief letter or thank you card to express your appreciation. If it’s a job fair you are thanking them for taking time to speak to you – this can help solidify you as a person in their minds. With a job interview, you are thanking them for giving you the opportunity to be interviewed.

If it’s a woman, I would suggest sending a hand written note. While it may sound sexist women tend to appreciate the personal touch more than a man and the act will mean more to her. The exception to this is if the woman gives you a very firm handshake and seems to have more of an aggressive personality. Also, if the man interviewing you seems to obviously pay attention and appreciate fine details, a hand-written note might be a good idea to send his way, as well.

If initial contact was sent via e-mail, sending an e-mail thank you is acceptable. However, it is best to follow up with a hard copy letter as soon as possible.

When creating a thank you letter, it is important to mention the date of the interview/meeting and remind them of the position you are applying for. Restate your interest in the position, as well as the company/organization. Try to mention something you learned from the interview/meeting, or at least comment on something important that was discussed.

You should also re-emphasize your strengths, experiences, skills and accomplishments. However, emphasize ones that slant towards points they seemed to consider the most important while speaking with you.
