laid-off-workHow to keep your job! To survive the layoffs that are happening on a daily basis you are going to need to be savvy and cunning. This is no time to get sloppy, you don’t want to be the first person employer looks to layoff.

As employees, bringing value to the business provides the best opportunity to secure stable and ongoing employment. Unfortunately it’s easier said than done. The following tips will give you a competitive edge through the tight times and when the inevitable recovery cycle begins.

Value:
Cement job security by value-adding and showing to your employer that you are an asset to their business and they NEED you. During tighter times, employers put higher value on staff who perform consistently and bring tangible benefits to the business.

Set yourself apart from the other workers. Take on extra duties, come into work early, find something that will set you apart. Maybe you’re a fast worker or have a particular skill that you can highlight.

Loyalty:
A quality employer values loyalty more than ever in times of uncertainty. Do your best to help them achieve both their long and short-term business goals, and you’re more likely to be valued as a long-term team member.

New responsibilities:
Take on additional responsibilities. This is a great way to widen skill sets and experience and makes you more attractive to keep. Work on improving efficiency levels or volunteer for a project to show commitment to the business’s ongoing success.

Go Above and Beyond:
Continue to show initiative and keenness, even if facing unemployment. Confidently and honestly show your employer how you were willing to go above and beyond for them, makes it more likely you’ll be seen as an asset.

Finally, remain calm and confident. The decisions you make today will determine your future prosperity long after the current challenges abate. Follow to above tips and you can be confident you did everything you could to keep your job.

If you do get laid off remember there is always tommorrow.
